The Las Vegas Women’s Rugby Football Club was founded in 2001.

Sarah Emory was an Air Force Academy grad and Janet Flamming was a University of South Dakota grad and both had previous Division 1 collegiate rugby experience. When they moved to Las Vegas they both found their way back to rugby via the Las Vegas Challenge Rugby Tournament and the Crown & Anchor Pub.

Upon learning there were some UNLV girls with some interest in forming a team, Deana Cummings, Sarah and Janet sat down to formulate a plan for how to build it. The first goal of that plan was to form a 7′s team for the upcoming Midnight 7′s Tournament.

So it all started with a deep conversation at the Crown and Anchor (and a few drinks later named the team the “Slots”–mainly as a play off the men’s team name, but yes, also for it’s dual meaning.)

So we began working with the university, organizing recruitment tables and practice space, and fund-raising for uniforms. We practiced on the Tuesday and Thursday nights at the UNLV Intramural fields and we ran with coach Neil Knappenberger and the UNLV boys.

The Las Vegas Women’s Rugby Club made their inaugural appearance in the 2001 Midnight 7s tournament with 12 players. We participated for the first time as a team which was a lot of fun. Shortly afterwards, we started practicing for 15s.
